Wintersun is a Finnish melodic death metal band led by singer and guitarist Jari Mäenpää.
In 2004, Jari Mäenpää split from his previous band Ensiferum.
In the same year he produced the demo Winter Madness alone and later the debut album Wintersun with drummer Kai Hahto from Rotten Sound.
Mäenpäa wrote the published tracks between 1995 and 2003. Wintersun was released on September 13, 2004 through the Nuclear Blast label.
The Japanese edition also included all three tracks from the demo as bonus tracks. A video was shot for the single Beyond the Dark Sun.
