The Exploited was founded in Edinburgh, Scotland, in the early 1980s by Wattie Buchan, John Duncan, Gary McCormack and Drew "Dru Stix" Campbell. In 1981 their debut album Punks Not Dead was released, which reached number 20 in the UK charts and sold 150,000 copies. Over the summer, the band embarked on the Apocalypse Now tour with Discharge, performing in London the day after the Brixton riots. In October, the band made the charts with the EP Dead Cities and an appearance on Top of the Pops, which The Exploited was often accused of in the scene]. Another tour of Great Britain followed.
